So I've created a new website using a 5 year old domain, its no secret i want to sell website templates cause i have some skills in designing, but i'm to lazy create keyword related content. so if i rely on backlinks alone should i be ok?

What do you guys prefer backlinks over content or the other way around?

You need to have content as well as backlinks. It also depends on the competition you have.

You got to write content to build backlinks, isn't it? Look at press releases, videos, article marketing, guest blogging, forum & blog commenting and more.. Except forum profiles, reciprocal linking and footer/sidebar links, you cannot do without keyword related content.

I think outsourcing is a good option for you. Still, I suggest you do not be lazy and start researching a couple of articles in your niche and come up with your own content. At least you should be writing some content in order to build your social presence!

Keyword content is very important because that is the aspect of your site that you have the most control. Your site will last longer if you have good content based on good chosen keywords, so at least you must use keywords for the title of some of the content you are planning to write.

This is very important because is very common that you get traffic from the search engines even for related keywords according to what you wrote. Is funny that sometimes you will find that some searches will be related to keywords you don't even thought about, but that are part of your content (combinations of related keywords).

Another positive aspect about having good content is that your site will gain authority with time.

Thank you everyone for you're opinions and advice, but i saw some of my competitor(http://www.organizedthemes.com/) with just a tiny bit of content on their website they rank high on SE's, they are 78,780 on alexa rankings that mean they receive a lot of traffic. whats up with that?

but yeah i'm going to take you're advice i'll build a blog about my themes. and post articles on some article websites

There are sites that are not content-based in nature and Google ranks them accordingly. But I believe having good content is an advantage.

Without content, I'd say that it's literally impossible to rank for a term. It is possible if you have the barebones, ie: a keyword rich title, meta description, and short contextual blurb on your homepage, but it will require and excessive amount of high PR links from relevant websites.

You can try alone with backlinking, but what the issue of concern is who would like to get linked to zero content website. It will be great for you, if your website could attract backlinks itself.

It is 100% possible to rank for a term without relevant content. Take for example the technique of "Google bombing" where the term "miserable failure" brought up the result of "George Bush" - and I'm pretty confident those words weren't on the site ;)

But for a competitive term, you're going to need all the help you can get - and that means unique content including a natural quantity of your target keywords and relevant other terms.

Your best bet is to buy the content. If you can't find it here, try oDesk. All the best with your efforts...

try to have come good content in the article you could still rank for keywords even if the article doesnt directly have it sometimes, you can just use it in some anchor text but not ALL, use some Lsi keywords for some anchor text, also use partial anchors, as well as naked links (those are links with no anchor text at all). Also use some anchors like for example, CLICK HERE, or IF you would like more info click this link, or VISIT for more info, when you combine those it looks natural but also relevent to that keyword and you can still rank for that word with out over doing it in the article itself too much.

ALSO i forgot try doing some INTERNAL linking as well, because somepages with out internal links wont get easily spotted if at all with the crawlers no matter how much keyword rich it is. Plus it improves your SEO as well. and it spreads the page rank through out all the pages on your site including the domain. So if you know one of your pages have a higher PR then some, if you add links posting to other links on your page it will share some of that PR juice with the Entire site= Authority :)

I have to say I don't think I would ever use 'click here' as an anchor - it seems a wasted opportunity. But there is some value in linking out to authority sites also, like wiki.

you dont have to use click here but if all your anchors are the Main keyword it WILL hurt you. anchors that show take action comments like go here only makes google think your naturaly trying to provied info. if I find the youtube vid you will see.

You should balance the both of them because they are very vital for your website. You can't pick one over the other.

Indeed, keyword variety is important - have a higher percentage of your anchors as your primary keyword and have the rest as associated keywords and longtails. But still you don't need to waste links with 'click here'!
