Hello, I have a question about backing up a Joomla website. Do I have to set the website offline through the backend when doing the backup process ?? I planned to back up the sql file and then download the website through ftp. Thanks, BillyTK
Why not use Akeeba backup tool, I have it on all my Joomla sites and it backs up files and database in one go https://www.akeebabackup.com/download/akeeba-backup.html
To answer your specific question, no you do not need to put the site offline while dumping the database (in my opinion). However, you should definitely look into the Akeeba Backup option that animan mentioned. It makes the whole setup and restore process much easier on Joomla sites. Moving them from server to server is also a breeze.
We did tutorial for how to take Joomla websites using akeeba backup extensions, you may read this - https://www.pcmshaper.com/blog/tutorial/backup-joomla-with-akeeba-backup
