backing up database

    Contact the administer and ask them to enable SSH for your account. Most will.

    If they don't..you can use a script to execute the same commands I gave you above..

    Normally I know hosts won't give SSH access due to security issues

    An SSH account can be restricted and controlled.

    Just ask your host rather than assuming...

    If they refuse to grant you SSH access to your account then use PHP or Perl to execute the commands I posted.

    -or- tell them to back up the mySQL database. Then change hosts.

    I use automysqlbackup, a freely available script from sourceforge. It works great taking daily, weekly, and monthly backups and emailing them to you. I email them to my gmail address for a poor mans "off site backup".
