Back to #1

My one year old site made it to #1 on M$N about 5 months ago. But I was also in Google's sandbox, or perhaps suffering from a "too many links too quick penalty".

So, in early Jan this year, I dumped a lot of links (forum sigs, link exchanges, etc) to try to help my Google situation. I was released from the box (Feb 7) and happy with rank on G, but I fell on M$N from #1 to #4.

Since mid-Feb, I've been slowly obtaining links again. Two weeks ago I went from #4 to #3. Yesterday I went from #3 to #2. And today, I go from #2 back to #1.

My on-page is good clean content and tags, and links are mostly good quality (maybe 20% junk links). But the climb back to #1 took about 3 months.

You think Google throws you into the sandbox for forum links?

I have several #1 spots that do very little for me. :(
(even for pretty darn big keywords)

My question is.. Do you think Google will sandbox your site because you have links to your site coming from forum signatures?

Sandbox is 100% related to the age of the site, and age of the links to the site.
The "value" of the links is a different issue altogether (IMHO).

I just checked MSN for our site and we are buried down around 30, so I can't say I'm too happy with their current algo. But, that's MSN for you. King of the world today, MIA tomorrow.

Not sure if you're asking me, but if so, the answer is no.

I wasn't saying that forum sigs put me in the box. I believe I was sandboxed as a new site with aggressive SEO. I think I made it out after about 5 months as I jumped from # 750 or so to #36, for my main keyphrase.

I then got very aggressive with link building, and I saw my site fall over the next 3 months from #36 to #56 to #75 to #136. I'm not saying link building was the cause, simply stating two factual events.

My best guess was that I was suffering from a too-many-too-quick filter. So, in the hope of changing direction, I dumped links that I had control over. That includes forum sigs.

Sandbox refers to a penalty imposed due to a site being less than a year old, and had nothing to do with over SEOing a site.

That is opinion. The one year mark is not definitive. I was out (I believe) after about 5.5 months. I went from #750 or so to #36.

Also, I believe SEO can (not always) ensure time in the box. There have been a number of people who have said little or no SEO and very slow link building has allowed them to avoid the sandbox entirely.

I haven't tried it so I can't say with certainty, but I wouldn't dismiss it either.
