I don't think directory submission is becoming obsolete, links coming from reputable directories specially human edited ones are being respected by search engines. And with the number of directory owners in this forum promoting their website, I doubt if directories are becoming obsolete.

I have had trouble with backlinks in the past. As we all know, the best links are high PR and relevant sites. These are the most difficult to get, and you have to try to get them without linking back to them since the search engines don't favor this. I'll keep researching and make a thread as to how to achieve this goal.
Thanks for your replies I am doing a couple of tests on seo and trying to get two sites I have ranked for a certain phrase I got one site I made recently to rank No1 for a chosen key phrase but is want a big challenge so I am upping my game I have researched the keyphrase for one of my sites The No1 site in google doesnt have many back links although other sites listed beneath it do I hope to do this with a blog and classified lists mainly and also myself posting on blogs Although the site is geo targeted so I need to get local backlinks Let you know how I get on and am sure i will have more questions
