Hi, as you can guess I am new to all of this and as I am learning, I keep hearing about back links. I can understand the importance of them, however I don't understand them. How do you make one, where do you put one and how do they help page ranking? Seems like there should be a simple, easy to understand guide about them. All I have found just confuse me more. Can any one help?

The rules around backlinks are always changing and a little bit mystical.

Essentially they're a popularity contest - you want people to like you, and you want the cool kids to like you. If the uncool kids like you it can be a bad thing - remind you of school?

So you need to find out who, in your niche, the cool kids (ie authority sites) are and work out how to get them to post a link to your site. You might need to submit a new and original article on your subject (because you are an expert) or you might need to buy a link (without it being obvious) or use one of the many, many other methods. And you need to read, and experiment!

Just remember, there are bad links and there are good links. You need to know the difference.
