back-links in forums signatures?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by parttimer, Apr 21, 2009.

I am very much a new comer to webpage development and search engine optimization and have a query about back-linking. If a person has for example 2000 posts and the add a link to their signature, does this classify as 2000 back-links? or is there something I'm missing here. thanks. also if i was to post my link here like so http://www.parttimejobshq.com is that deemed a backlink or is that what's classified as spamming, liable to get one kicked off a forum? many thanks

So far what I have analyzed is the Google considers every signature(on a page) a backlink..:)

No, it will not be counted as 2000 backlinks as you add a signature after doing 2000 posts, which means your all postings before 2000 posts wouldn't show any signature. It is only after you have posted 2000 posts; and then you continue posting will your signature appear and serve as a backlink.

In theory all can be counted as backlinks - in practice, if you're got loads from the same place, google will start ignoring after a few hundred. Plus, from the sort of forum that has loads of sig links, they're not very high value - their main use is getting a page indexed quickly if it's a frequently crawled site.
Whether or not it's spamming depends on the rules of the forum - on dp, as you've just demonstrated, new members can't post live links. After you've been a member for a while you can add a signature link.

I doubt you'll get high PR back links from this, but yeah, I try to always keep my website in my sig for this reason :)

Nope, not all are converted into relevant backlinks. some are just ignored by spiders.
I know some of the forums needs to have at least 20 post to have a sig in which you could make a keyword linked to your site but not all of your sig links are counted as backlinks.

Another hint if you're going to place your links on forums. Select Do-follow forums sites, .gov and .edu forums. :)
Good Luck on your SEO venture.

From my experience Google does seem to recognise most, if not all signature links. You would need a hell of a lot to improve your PR though. But every little helps!

    Hi

Google would consider those links but it would not help much as all the backlinks would be from the same place and this would not be of much value

    thanks,
    Ankur

If you have 1000s from a highly valued forum, would that improve things from Google's perspective? Or are they still devalued at some point?

Does google differentiate sig links and post content links?
