Back links detection/visibility

I have started a website mainly blogging content around a month ago. Eventually, I submitted my site to some directories and left comments at other blogs with my link and hence was thinking I was gaining good number of backlinks. But, my back links surprisingly never increased.

When I do a 'site:www .mysite. com', it results in 9 links all from my site.

Has google stopped tracking links in signatures, names, comments etc in forums and blogs?

    These are my stats:

This site has 9 links in Google.
This site has 147 links in Yahoo.
This site has 0 links in Technorati.
This site has 367 pages indexed in Google.
This site has 152 pages indexed in Yahoo.

I have submitted to a bunch of sites, and directories and am wondering why those back links do not show up with google. I only have 9 links  in google????

Can someone explain why this is so, if it is common.

Sorry, if a similar question has been asked.

The 'link:www .mysite. com' on google won't show actual backlinks to your site. For more accurate backlinks count on google, you should check it through google webmasters tool.

oh yeah that's correct. I see more links in the webmaster tool! Is there any reason for hiding those from the general public?
