If you were to submit your website to a search engine or directory, they would ask you for a site description and category to place it in.

So your site would be indexed on one of their pages hence a backlink. make sure to place them on a relevant site dont place them for example on a medical site when your trying to sell shoes, you want traffic from people that are looking to buy shoes not people looking for a second opinion
