this happens to me sometimes, i think it is just the search engines updating their database. maybe sometimes they just clean up old pages that are duplicates or something...

Which tool are you using? Yahoo Site Explorer? This happens sometimes. I noticed it recently as well. Sometimes they don't show all the sitewide links so the link count is heavily reduced.

It doesn't affect rankings at all, the tool is just showing a different sample of backlinks.

Google/Yahoo have always shown different link profiles, although recently G has shown more detailed link data.

Yea you are right. If some is targeting good SERP in Google, He should more worry about the link count shown in Google webmastertools than in Yahoo site explorer.

I would worry about getting quality links more then anything else, to be honest.

Right. Quality is much better than quantity.

It usually happens when the backlink sources have been down for some time or didn't exist anymore during the latest google index update.
So try trace them back through your own BL checkers and see if your past sources are no longer live.

I think not all your backlink will listed there, for example if you submit your article, your article not stay forever at those place or search engine hardly search your link because that place may get update again and again..
