If you had the chance to get a Bachelor's Degree in the IT field,

which area of study would you recommend and why?

Programmer/Analyst, Database Management or Web Management?

    Thanks,

Hmm I would go for web management. I'll let somebody else do the programming.

I would go for database management, you can become specialized in a particular database and that is big money, big banks, huge corporations all demand such expertize. On the other hand, web management and programmers seemed far too common on the market.

Go for DB, that'd be best choice for a degree.

Hey, are you going to an English University to do this? I'm starting Internet Computer Science at Christchurch in Canterbury in September.

I beg to differ on your statement. School Education is never a waste, not all people end up being Bill Gates, national average shows a graduate earns far more than a non graduate. And a PhD earns far more than a Masters. Of course if you happen to be Bill Gates, you can say education is not important but for most people, education does provides a great opportunity to go "up" in society.

Also School Education provides an opportunity to learn interaction skills. Why do I take my MBA? To hand out name cards to my peers? To interact and network with such people will go a long away in life.

Granted that education can be out of school but still you need a necessary foundation to best absorb education "out of the school" in the real life world.

Thanks to all for the info and opinions!

I also have been told that it is best to get a 2 year Associate Degree in these fields because technology is moving at such a fast pace that 4 year degrees are over kill unless you want to teach.

Any opinions on 2 year vs 4 year degree programs?

    Thanks again!

Being a Systems Administrator myself, I would say the best route would be Programmer. In doing that, usually you learn a lot of other stuff to go with it, like Database Management. I wouldn't be too incredibly concerned about what you choose because in the IT field, it doesn't really matter what your degree says, it's how versatile you are in learning new things. But I can tell you that the more you know, the better. I have been a programmer, database management, network guru, web developer, software engineer, and hardware expert......anything that breaks, I can just about figure out now....

It depends exactly what you want to do later in life.

Personally i'm a good programmer, so i'd probably choose one of the others as it would be more of a challenge to me whereas doing a programming degree would be simple and I would know most of the content already.

Very true! I plan to hit the books in web development next year, been running an export company for 7 years out of japan, money is great but in the end it is a hassle if you are not into what you do. 30 years old and starting over, least I am financially setup enough now to enjoy the ride.
