AWStats reports that this month alone i have had about 40,000 Error 404 Document Not Found Errors

It is showing traffic to links that were from an old Joomla installation that are no longer there

Google Webmasters tools show 0 404 Errors

    What gives?

    and

    How do I correct this?

AWstats reports all the missing small files like tiny images inside a web page. Go through the awstats log and fix those images. most probably you have teh image directories wrong somewhere. Google reports the 404 only if teh actual page is missing.

    Google webmaster tools?

At first I was thinking analytics - if that is what you mean you would have to put the analytics code on your 404 page for Google to know, AWstats sees all your server activity.

Google webmaster tools only shows indexed data errors. If there are a lot of dynamically generated 404 pages, then google may take a long time to index these problems. I would definitely check to see if the 404 errors are images or include files, etc...

ok now we are getting to the heart of the problem

see those images and directories are no longer there

they were from a Joomla install and now I use Drupal Exclusively

also many of my 404 are old indexed Joomla URLS

    h t t p : //shareyourexpertise. com/index.php/environment/sustainability/we-are-rotting-in-our-own-trash. html

This URL no longer exists but for some reason Drupal does not pick it up as not being there and it redirects to front page giving me duplicate content issues
