In my awstats I see this bit of information and can't figure out why or how these links come about. Any info would be appreciated.

Your just lucky. Quality traffic for quality sites :)

But seriously I have the same situation on my sites. Must be all those pop ups I clicked

That's referrer spamming: fake referrers provided by low quality web sites to get your attention or the attention of your visitors if your stats are public.

Hi, Jean-Luc is right, but also it may be from adwords displayed on those sites - of course if you have adwords.
Basically those are fake and the traffic is not real.

Is there anything that can be done to stop this?

You cannot stop them. The URL's change quite often, their user agents and ip addresses change often as well.

Do not publish your stats, because this would give the spammers even more motivation to spam your logs.

And when you look at your stats, do as if these  referrers don't exist. If you need to show the report to others, edit the report manually to remove these fake referrers.
