If you are new to progamming and wanna learn the 2 most popular languages in today's world, I would recommend the following two websites:
    www.learnpython.org for learning Python
    http://www.learnjavaonline.org/ for learning JAVA.
    Happy Coding!

TheNewBoston.com is also a great one.
Bucky manages to explain the concepts of programming languages pretty well so that even the most basic beginner can understand it.

    I co-sign TheNewBoston.com.

I'd also like to suggest w3schools.com for those of you interested in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and server-side programming.

    Thanks techieanish :)
Let's not forget php.net for PHP! I wish they had an interactive code thing like you said, though, but I imagine it'd be a security issue.

The most popular language is the language that has the most jobs!
And is not python by a mile!

But rather than me telling you what is the most popular language, just go and browse jobs for web developers and you will figure it out your self.

Once you have done that then learn that language.

But there is also another side to the story, if you learn a language not allot of people know than you are in higher demand. It's the terminology niche business, it's allot harder to get there as the documentation you read is most likely sparse.

My personal preference is but not limited to: PHP, CSS(3), SCSS, HTML(5), jQuery, MySQL.

And I have high respect for people that do Python, ASP.net etc...
