I have read that it is best to avoid low quality sites when submitting for back links. That is understandable, as the links will not count for much. But I am wondering if there is any actual negative effect that can arise from putting links on low quality sites? Does Google look on you as a type of spammer if it sees that you have many back links on low quality, or irrelevant sites?
I forgot to include this in my post: I sometimes put in ads in classified ad sites. And I wonder if those are considered super low quality, and if, as I was asking in my first post, doing so could actually hinder my site ranking?
Actually No, because it would cause havoc. Your competitors could EASILY take your link and submit to low quality sites to hurt you. Google cannot allow such foul play to influence there rankings or even more so their business. Yes there is a difference in the quality of link but I don't believe anyone link can actually hurt you. It leaves way too much room for foul play.
Yes, I guess I am too innocent or something like that. I never even thought of that. It would be easy to do in your competitors if google paid attention negatively to links.
I also had not thought about that competitive tactic. In general though it's best to stick with the higher ranking sites even if you aren't penalized for posting on low ranking sites. I've found that birds of a feather flock together on those lower quality classified ad sites. When marketing there I rarely attracted any prospects. Most were people who wanted to push their opportunity on me or were tire kickers. Stick to more reputable sites like commenting on high PR blogs, etc. More eyeballs on your link because it resides on a more trusted source. Ryan Biddulph
every link counts to some extent, give that it is coming from a legit site. as long as you avoid spammy sites, link farms, bad neighborhoods, it is ok to have links from low quality or sites with less not no authority. they might not help much but wont hurt you either.
Yes, I know the links themselves on classified sites, will not attract any decent traffic. The only reason I put them there is to accumulate the sheer volume of back links coming to my site, as that must be good for it. This goes under the "every little bit helps" category.
There is no harm in incoming links even if it comes from banned sites. It does not hurt your website but it does not help either. I tried out using Adsense revenue sharing sites recently. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1866667 I still prefer article links since these are more permanent. some of these sites have referral scheme. If you like to join as my referral, you can spend me a private message.
Maybe you have to search about google bowling. I don't know if it can harm your site if you have backlinks from irrelevant sites. But as long as you maintain good quality content and get good backlinks, you don't have to worry about it
I think if you got enuff high quality links, then low quality links will not harm you, and might even benefit you a little. By low quality I mean links from link farms, gambling/adult websites, etc
I have read from a few places (i don't remember where exactly) that inbound links from low quality sites will not harm you, but if you are linking to low quality sites, then that's a different matter altogether. Outbound links to those sites might eventually harm your site's ranking. Anyone can confirm this or put more weight to this point? Really appreciate it.
Agreed. In terms of link strength, forum sig links and blog comments are relatively low quality but they still count.
If your site is very new then they put you in the sandbox. If your site is older it has no overall effect. Think about it, if backlinks could destroy rankings, then people would post spammy backlinks to their competitors sites' to drop their search ranking.
