So you want to have your own website at www.yourname.com ? Now for that you do not need to sign up with a host who gives you a free domain name. Free domain names is one of the most common traps web hosting providers get people with !! Domain names and webhosting do not need to be bought from the same provider. How webhosts provide free and cheap domains is that they cover the cost in their hosting charges which you pay per month. So even if they charge a dollar extra a month for hosting they easily get out the cost of the domain. And I would recommend you to register your domain name with a registrar different from your web hosting provider...

I am not sure if this is worth a lot of discussion, but good tips, I like them, should prevent people from falling into the scams of Free domain providers, although a FEW of them actually do it for aspiring web developers to give them a boost and keep a backlink from them for life, I think thats all they want. There are some like that too

One thing to add, I fell into the trap because the DNS, name server all all those complicated domain configurations made it to hard for me to forward my domain to my third party host (the URL forwards to the link, but remains at www. myname.com and not www. myname.com/contact.html this is very bad for SEO!).

Is this really true of any host that offers a free domain name along with it's hosting or is it limited to just a few of them that give the others a bad name?

buying domain names with a hosting package when they are included free are also a way for them to (if you cancel) still force you to pay some money..

I bought dreamhost hosting w/free domain for a total of $19 for this year, using a coupon code, but since their servers have yet to effectively run any of the 5 different scripts i have tried i was going to request a refund, if i actually went through with the refund, i was going to be instead of getting back my $19 i would only get $10 because they were going to charge me for the domain of $9. So basically i wont use the account, not going to cancel the hosting of 200gig and 2tb for a $9 domain
