Avoid duplicate content in Wordpress

I cant recall how it was done, but I read somewhere some time ago that one actually could get punished for having duplicate content on the site - the bots finding the same article at your own site twice, and then slapping you around for it. How do I avoid this? Not letting the bot into the categories folder or something, am I way off?

For the records: the articles are unique on the web, I just dont wanna mess up with some kind of tiny detail and get myself deindexed..

    Thank you.

Yup, fixed with All in One SEO Plugin. But I`m pretty sure there was one or two other things I should do, I just can`t think of what it was.. :p Something about the bots not finding the same content at the same site several times, something else than canonical url. Maybe I`m mistaking here?
