Windows Media Player can play avi video. You can embed the WMP with avi on your website.
You can also convert avi to FLV (Flash video), which works cross platform and cross browser. Tool you can use is Moyea Video4Web Converter, which is free - http://www.playerdiy.com/downloads/converter/
To add FLV to web page, you need a Web FLV player, check playerdiy.com. It is a quick solution to make custom FLV player for website. This is tutorial - http://www.playerdiy.com/support/tutorial/customize-flash-video-player.html

Embedded Windows Media Player will work. As far as I know where is Windows Media Player for MAC. Another solution is to re-encode the videos to WMV and use Silverlight.

I suggest you don't use avi for web video streaming, as avi cannot be played in Adobe Flash Player. It's recommended to use FLV as video format on web page, so that it can be streamed via Flash player.
