Average Visitor Length?

    Hey guys,

I recently installed statcounter on my site and was checking my "visitor length" tab.

It says here that 83% of my visitors stay at my site for 5 seconds or less. My site is a one page sales letter: www.musclegaintruth.com

Is this normal for this type of site? My conversion rate is about 1% overall...

But I wonder if the short visiting length has something to do with the time that it takes the page to load. If that were the case then optimizing the site for faster loading time should see an improvement in sales. Or maybe this % of people who come and leave right away is normal.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Sean

I don't have time to check your page load time but as long as it's quick, consider this...

Internet visitors don't read...they scan. 83% of your visitors are scanning, not finding what they wanted or what they expected and then are leaving. Look at which page of your site gets the most entries and then start changing that page to be more informative, more helpful, more detail oriented as to "how we can help you." Then wait a week or two and watch your stats. Test and re-test.

FAR TOO MUCH information on the page, I think you'll find that most visitors have glazed over before 5 seconds have passed.

It reminds me of the sites that promise google tips etc, and you have to scroll down to the bottom to find out that the free download doesn't exist.

I would recommend you have 2-3 paragraphs on the home page, each containing 3-4 sentences with 8-12 words per sentence.

    GET YOUR POINT ACROSS QUICKLY

Also, I am always wary of sites that offer products massively discounted ie all of this for just xx, save 90%. It devalues the product.

    Hope that helps

Both are good comments...less is more. Don't barf information on your client. A 500 word essay telling people they can loose weight fast is far less effective as "Loose Weight Fast". Feed them bits of info at a time. If you are trying to make a sale, then lead those bits to your close.

On one of my other sites I installed a statistics analytics website as well and it showed me about 95% of the visitors were spending 5 seconds or less. After a redesign with key focus on main parts mainly the first page and the top 15% of the design it showed an increase of amount of time spent.

I'd say decrease the amount of text on your website focus on the initial top 20% of the page to grab the user.

I learned long ago, too much text is very bad.

I would imagin that if your site gets alot of returning visitors then you they will stick around for longer, but if your site gets alot of new visitors then they will not stay for long if the information that your site offers is not quite what they were looking for.

I have an entertainment site and I also get around 75% - 83% of visitors leaving my site between 0 - 5 seconds.

People on the Web don't like to stick around in one place to long when they are trying to find something. They browse through the web really quickly until they find exactly what they are looking for.

Also, a percentage of that could be stats from a search engines robot or crawler. I think a percentage of mine is from robots and crawlers.

Yes, much of it is determined by how they got there. For instance if someone types in funny stuff and comes to my humor site they will tend to stay for a while but if they typed in something like bush speech and just happened to get one of my bush jokes they will leave fast.

I noticed that when I had less posts on my forums that the time was down to about 45% of people staying 1 minute or less. Now its about 40% 1 minute or less cuz of more posts

My blog doesn't get much traffic, of course I do it just to share my views, not make a living off of it. But I notice that I have an average visit time of 0. So, that could mean that they are not interested in reading what I wrote or it's some kind of automated thing.

Maybe if I start adding some pics or something to catch their eye, they may decide to read the articles as well. It's only 2 months old and the visitor rate is increasing, but like I said....it's just to express my views.

Speaking of which....I need to add some more articles.

That would happen, but once you get a certain amount of content, then the more you add will not necessarily mean that you visitor will stay longer.

If you only have 5 pages then adding another 20 pages will most probably make your visitors stay on your site longer. But if you had 5,000,000 pages and then added another 1,000 pages then you visitor will probably not stay on your site longer as there is so much content in the first place, although by adding the 1,000 new pages will mean that the content is new and fresh, so that could also help.
