So is there any downside for an American with an income of $40,000+ moving to india? seems like I'd be able to live like a king there. Whats the catch?

Simple catch - India isnt America!

Theres a totally different culture here and anything considered normal by an american may be abnormal here.
Secondly, you might find the horrible infrastructure very irritating and red-tapism and corruption might get you pulling your hair out.

It is called "babudom" in India....in fact, India is considered to be one of the most difficult places to do business in.

economy dose not realy run on salary, there are other factors included, like the inflation etc! don't think that 1$ = 40 Inr etc! is great! as this dose not explains anything!

in india, the salary is less and so is expense! in other countries salary and cost of living both are high, so it balances everthing!

out sourcing is not all that cheap! as there not too many people who know internet or such types of jobs, so they can't really do content writing or paid posting stuffs! and the people who do and do such work, always charge the right price!

hey, myra, what have you done to your avatar!

anyways! a cafe coffee day, coffee costs $1 arround! what dose it costs in your country, must be more than this!

one of my friend earns about $5000 and another earns $50000 a month, both of them are business men and they are pretty rich! but then poor people in india don't earn much, and yes some of them earn less then $1 a day!!

people in villages dose earn $1 or less, but then they are not interested in money of facilities, they lead a disease free life, and die at the age of 80-90 years of a healthy life! so money is not important to them, all that is important is natural life! and in india there are plenty of them!
    cheers!

Cost living is also important for salary.. if any country has salary per month 5000USD and for living if tats 4000$(only for basic needs) that time tat 5000 is also a cheap salary... so salary should also be a factor with living cost of tat place..:)

To consider cost of living, one can look at the PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) figures.

In India per capita income is $3200 per year after adjusting for PPP.

It means at an average, an Indian can afford to live in same manner as that of a US citizen with $3200 annual income...or $266 per month.
