Would any of you be willing to post sites where you paid some of the bigger amounts? One poster mentioned paying $50. Since I've been playing around with the idea of making a niche directory I would be interested in seeing what makes a directory special enough to charge those kinds of rates and actually get them.
It is kind of hard to put a price on a directory listing unless you are really established, and a good niche that webmasters greatly want the exposure and quality click thrus coming from you. There's been a bunch of directories that have come and went. It is only a matter of time.
If you are just trying to screen people out by using the charge, then do $1 for regular submissions (and be sure to explain clearly why you are charging the $1) and then charge a slightly higher price for the better submissions.
I don't want that low, because I don't want my directory to get too crowded either, I want people who submit to my directory get clicks from it. Also I don't want that low, because the time and money I spend on advertseing it, I want to get something out of it. If I charge one dollar, I won't promote it as much.
If it is possible $1 submissions brings more than 5x the new submissions, it may be more worth the time and money you spend on it. I don't know your exact position, you need to do the financial and market analysis yourself.
