Average position query

In my account most of my kwds show an Avg Pos of 1 -3, yet when I test them with a Google search, most are not even in the first 10 positions.

(This only happens since the 'big slap', which has affected me although I have nothing to do with affiliates - I market my own product).

How come such big difference between 'Avg. Pos' and actual results?

    Thanks

I've been having a problem with this with one of my campaigns in the last few days. About half the time, the advert appears at the top, and the other half, it's nowhere.

I'm not running out of budget, and the preview site always shows the advert.

I've spoken to Google, who have given these two, totally unhelpful possibilities...

    - Your targeting options: Your ad's position varies with the user's
language and location settings and how other ads compete in these areas.
The average ad position listed in your account reflects these factors.
Therefore, if your ad targets multiple languages and locations, the
position of your ad that you see on Google is likely to be higher or lower
    than the average.

    - System responses: Google responds to each search uniquely. For example,
if you search for your ad multiple times on Google, our system might adapt
the results in order to better relate to your needs. Therefore, the
position of your ad is likely to change

Turns out that it's the second issue.

Basically, if you keep searching for keywords that you are bidding on, and don't click on your advert, Google has now decided that this means that you don't like the advert, so it shows you other ones instead (great for users, useless for account managers!).

You're supposed to look at the ad preview page to see what's really happening: www.google.com/adpreview

Well I'll be a donkey's testes! I already knew about the Google test page, but previously it was giving the same results as a normal Google search, so I didn't bother with it. After reading your reply I just tried it and my keywords are back at #1-3. Yet as I said before, since the big 'slap' my normal Google results were down by many positions. Google must have reinforced the rule to which you have referred in their recent algo change. That's good news ---- no problem with my campaign then!
