I have visited many forums where people talk of using automation to increase traffic and revenue.

But whenever, I go into the details of it, it turns out to be some kind of manipulation or spam.

I just wanted to know...Is there something called "Automation without manipulation" or "Automation without spamming"

If Yes, can anybody give an example of how automation can be used in a clean, decent way...

    Any ideas..

I suppose nobody wants to give away their secrets for free...

;) That makes it more certain, that something like that exists,

Generally, If you're automating your site promotion, it means you are spamming.

The ind of things that you automate.

    1) Comment/Trackback spamming
    2) Content (Machine Generated)
    3) Site structure (Using a site builder of some description) - Although this isn't considered spamming in itself, when used with other techniques, it certianly is.

There are other things too, but generally, automation = spam.

(Not in all cases, but yeah - you know what I mean).

I would like to have more explanation on point 2.

    Machine generated content,

Suppose one uses a script for extracting content from a copyright free source to one's own site (not others) , still , will it be spamming??

I don't think so, Any views,

    It's debatable...
I don't have a difinitive answer on that, however I would say that search engines would penalise you for using duplicate content.

Which is where machine generated content comes in.

Machine Generated content doesn't really make any sense - It's just keyword rich content that fools search engines...

an example of how it might sound...
That was generated using A certian bit of cloaking/content generation software..

It is 100% auto generated, spam content...

    thats true,

I got confused betn "Machine Generated Content" and "Machine Extracted Content"

I think the former = spam whereas the later is not..

    Am I right?

Yeah I guess so, although "Machine Extracted Content" is still kinda spammy - simply because it's not going to offer anything new to a Search Engine index.

Duplicate content filters are pretty tight these days for that exact reason.

For me "web site automation" means basically three things:

1.) Using autoresponders to share valuable content
    * I've been using the autoresponder -strategy for years and love the consept, it just works.

2.) Giving people a good reason(s) to promote your web site and product
    * For me this is giving people reasonable commissions for getting deals or leads for you. You can set an affiliate program of your own or use some of the third party providers (ClickBank.com, for example to name maybe the easiest one)

    3.) Making it viral
    * If you follow the right strategy, people are more than willing to share good material. Articles with resource boxes and coded eBooks are some examples of automating your promotion by making it viral.

The problem is, you really have to know what you're doing and you have to be willing to actually work for it. Not any free lunch there ;)
