    Hi All, :)

What about all the websites offering to auto submit
your website to a million directories (for a fee)?

Could that be asking for trouble?

    Thanks.

Dont waste your money. The major search engines Google, Yahoo and MSN provide 99% of website traffic.

I agree 100%. Do suggest you submit to DMOZ.

Let's keep Search Engines and Directories straight.

Submitting to Search Engines is pretty useless.

Submitting to Directories is quite useful for building your incoming links.

The submission services I have seen have been for Search Engines, not Directories.

I have considered building a submission service for directories, but I am not confidant that this would be a social good.

I agree with will, being included in DMOZ gives you an incredible number of backlinks, but that's not all, instead of trying to negociate link exchanges or whatever, there are quite a few SEO friendly directories to submit to...that's nice amount of backlinks!

For a complete link building campaign you would seek out both one way and reciprocated links.

I have seen some of these services, they normally cost around $1 per directory.

I don't think I would ever use one. To make directories work for you, you need to scroll through the available categories and choose the one that best fits. Being that most of the directories have different categories I'm not sure I'd trust an auto submit to get is right.

The other problem is if you get a sudden hit of back links in only a few days that might trigger a flag with the search engines. It's normally easier to submit to the low PR sites, so these are the ones most of those sites submit to. If you submit to a couple hundred of these small directories you will probably be excepted with in a few day by most of them. That many back links to new site will probably trigger a flag.

Better to do it yourself, choose the right categories, and just do a few a day.:)

I also don't consider it a good idea to submit to every directory with the same title and descriptions. Not that it hurts, but I've come to believe that mixing things up is a lot more effective when it comes to boosting search engine rankings.

In other words it's good to have different anchor text in links to your web site.

    [edit]
OT: To be honest, I've spent no cash at all towards buying links and almost all my sites are PR5/6. You can do it by building up good content and asking people to link to you and/or doing link exchanges.

Are you talking about FFAs or actual genuine directories?

Since there isnt 1 million directories or search engines (not even close to that number) any service that offers that amount of number will be submitting to FFA pages which are completely useless.

I'm not sure I agree with you. I think most of those sites just have a slight typo in their text. What they really mean is they will submit the email address you give them to 1 Million Spam Email lists. Of which I think most of them live up to that agreement very well:D
