Auto-Optimization with different results

    Hi,

Advertising with Google Adwords turned out to be very random and different.
For 2 small onlineshops, I am advertising with adwords, using 1 account, 2 campaigns and each with around 20 ad groups.
The products are similar, one shop for reptiles, the other one for birds.
Max CPC is depending on the product/keyword because each of the products has very different margin. (most of them very low because of price competition) ~0.15-0.30 as max bid.

The max bid price and daily budget (adwords fills around 7 of max 10 per day per campaign) is very similar with both campaigns/shops.

I setup the campaign with the same settings, CPC and manual optimization at the beginning.
=> both campaigns run similar and have a constant result paid by clicks, independent from conversions.

At the beginning of 2013, I switched delivery mode to CPC auto-optimization (1 conversion goal) and had about one week with shop A having conversions and less CPC cost. => +50% conversion rate in first week after switching to auto-optimization.
Shop B, also delivered auto-optimized, did not improve conversion rate but became more expensive with less clicks. => higher average CPC, less clicks, higher cost, constant conversion rate.

After first week from switching delivery mode to auto-optimized CPC, the conversion rate of shop A became lower again and remains constant on +20% of last year's (constant) conversion rate on adwords, too.

Side-effects: All the other campaigns (apart from adwords) also have very constant cost and conversion rates without significant changes. That's why I am sure, the conversion rate is not influenced by side-effects, season sales etc.

Now I tried to repeat the test, setup a new adwords account, mirrored the campaigns and settings one-to-one starting with CPC without auto-optimization again for 2 weeks. The cost, avg. CPC and conversion rate is the same as last year.
Next, I switched both campaigns to auto-opimization CPC (1 conversion goal) again. Same phenomenon again:
Shop A performs better for about 1 week, but decreases down from 2nd week since today.
Shop B performs worse than manually optimized and has higher cost on less conversions.

In addition to this, I tried different daily budgets and increased from 10 to 20 per day per campaign.
Now adwords is filling this budget daily between 15 and 20, but the conversion rate is down (for both campaigns). It seems to fill the budget without regards to quality or conversions, just burning my budget :-(

Do You have a tip how to hold the higher conversion rate on a low number of click as it is visible in the days immediately after switching delivery mode to auto-optimized on 1-conversion-goal?
Is there a better tool for replacing adwords’ own optimization and use a advertiser-friendly solution instead of burning the budget?

    Best, tester321
