I did a couple of searches on this before posting and I could not find this addressed anywhere. My problem, In the SERPs for keywords on which I have pages, I am getting spanked by the pages from general authority sites, (amazon, ebay wikipedia, etc..) and domains with massive link profiles. I checked backlinks, -- the authority site pages have no external links to the pages. Their pages rank high in the serps based on the domain strength alone. Now, I have sites that are based around the keywords I want to rank for. I could interlink some my relevently similar pages and seek out other external deeplinks to the pages I want to rank well. So, the question, all things being equal, -- Will a page from a keyword based site which has external deeplinks pointing to the page from relevent sites and others, Will that page outrank a page from an authority site, when the authority site page has no external links?
Depends on the rank of the authority site and if it is on topic. I would get the authority link and deep links if you can do both.
My sites are all PR 4 -5 and have the keyword in the domain name. I doubt that qualifies them to be authority sites. I can interlink some of my pages between my sites, plus I could get a few SB links plus Squidoo, Hubpages, etc.. As for getting links from Amazon, Wikipedia, Ebay what do you suggest?
Ebay "about me" pages will let you link out, Wikipedia links are no follow, Amazon I don't know about.
I suspect there's not much you can do - in fact a while ago seomoz did a 'whiteboard' on how you could block anyone from getting the top spot on serps by making sure wikipedia had it, solely on the strength of it's internal links http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-wikiwikiwiki-whack
Since those authority site already established great rankings with in their pages, PR juice and points already spreading within their pages, plus the domain name carry heavy points.
it depends on so many factors, but if you kept working on it by adding more relevant content and getting good backlinks with that keyword as an anchor text you can outrank them... and keep you inner linking structure in mind.
