How would you define an authority directory if I may ask?

I think it is more correct if you say that the term "authority site" is just a nickname. Google has never said that site links are a sign of authority or that site links are a way to prove that one site is better than another.

But here is what they say in my google webmaster tools:

    "Sitelinks
    www.index-it.net

Sitelinks are additional links Google sometimes generates from site contents in order to help users navigate your site. Google generates these sitelinks periodically from your site's contents.

Because we generate sitelinks dynamically, this list can change from time to time.

Google has not generated any sitelinks for your site. Sitelinks are completely automated, and we show them only if we think they'll be useful to the user. If your site's structure doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks are relevant to the user's query, we won't show them. However, we are always working to improve how we find and display sitelinks.
    "

So from what I can tell is that site links are only there to help users, and really have no other form of special meaning. However, I will admit that it does look good to type in your domain name and see extra links posted.

    You are wrong buddy. ;)

Sitelinks are additional links Google sometimes generates from site contents in order to help users navigate your site. Google generates these sitelinks periodically from your site's contents.

These are tons of blogs/forums/sites which have this feature, in no way it means its authority. :D

so what are authority sites ?

Google generates sitelinks only if the site is of high quality, old, popular etc. thats why sites like digitalpoint, avivadirectory, v7n, msn, yahoo, hostgator have sitelinks .. ;)

Authority sites is a term given by us and not by google! Do you find anywhere a list formed by google of authority sites or any information of authority in google books?

I would edit you line saying; Google generate sitelinks if the site is quality, old & seo n user friendly**. thats why...... :D

    **Google conditions apply. ;)

The strange thing about Google Site Links is that a niche directory I work for which is http://www.affiliateseeking.com received them in the last update. Now none of the sites structure has been updated for a good while as it hasn't been needed, so why didn't the site receive them straight away. It's like as if it's giving these site links to the more popular and quality sites as time goes by. Either that or it's because as they mention, "they are improving the way they find these site links all the time".

I have not really looked much into site links, so I don't really know how many sites have them, but have always seen the popular well known sites having them, not sure if thats just because I use these sites more often and therefore noticed it because of that or not.
