To register a .au domain name, an ABN (Australian Business Number) is required. ABNs are free, and can be registered online at www.abr.gov.au. Once you have an ABN, yes, you are then able to register a .au domain name.

I live in the Uk, but i want to secure my domain brand in key markets for future activation (before squatters move in). does any know of a solution to this issue with australian domains?

I kinda figured that out already, I wanted to know if there other ways/servies to regsiter that type of domain, as a trademark appliation is enough to get squatters attention these days.

Squatting really isn't an issue the way the .com.au is priced it's a much cleaner extension.
