Australian Domain Name Question to australians

    Hi guys & gals,

I have a friend in Australia who wants to do some business advertising. He asked me as an 'expert' to do some domain name research for him.

I need to get some idea from australians in the forum on the word 'oz' ... if he include 'oz' in the domain name, is that a good or a bad thing.

eg: guys in New York REALLY don't call it 'the big apple', that's a tourist expression, so anybody who calls new york the big apple must be a tourist.

Via the same logic is 'oz' a bad or a no-no word locally and should it rather be the full word australia. Keeping in mind that australia takes a while to type we would prefer oz.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

I think the problem there is that some people would spell that aussie some would auzzie and some with only one s .... it has to be simple to remember

All Australians spell "aussie" as "aussie". I've never seen anyone spell it "auzzie" or "ausie", except for you. It's very well accepted as "aussie".

"Oz" isn't too bad, it's probably a little bit of a tourist thing, but Australians would be willing to use it. "Aussie" is far, far more common, though.

    (and yes, I'm Australian)

Depending on what level of professionalism it needs, it might be good option to use the full term Australia. Alternatives could be just the 'Au' or perhaps 'Oceania' if it's for NZ aswell?

hi... yes Aussie is pretty well an accepted norm, oz seems a little "back yard", I guess the better question is why he would want an australian flavour to his/her... nope his site. Perhaps remind him to think on a global scale? My main site is a .com and any client sites I do (and they're all aussie sites) I always push the same way; "go .com it's cheaper, wider market share, global market... yada yada..." Another alternate is simply au for example auSportingStore.com or auAdvertising.com (hey that's available!) or if you have the domain already, just put up a sub domain and run it as au.MySite.com.

    Hope that helps :)

My advise would be to not include the term "aussie" at all. If they are targetting a predominantly australian market, get a .com.au domain name.
