I need to find a domain registrar that will act as my agent in Australia to register a .com.au domain name.

Or if there is none, I need to find someone from Australia to register a domain name for me.

To register a .com.au you need to have the business name registered within Australia also.. once you have done that then you should be able to register online without any troubles

So if I wanted to register an expired .com.au domain, I basically have no option?

In reality though there seems to be SO many Aussie domains that are registered without a business name also. Thats how ppl are sitting on .com.au domains (even other companies brands and trademarks) and doing nothing with them. I'd say a lot of AUS registrars let the restrictions slide.

I found 1 registrar that "Acts as the local resident in Australia" so that anybody can reg a .com.au name. However, they charge about $50/year, which is a lot I think.

As far as domaining is concerned .com.au is not worth it, their resale outside Australia is poor. If you want to target Australia and rank on Google.com.au thats a different story.

Essentially you just need an Australian ABN or ACN to register a com.au domain. You don't need the business name or trademark. It's also worth looking outside melbourneit (as they are super expensive) and other registrars offer much better prices.
