Austraila: City bans “bare skin” at swimming lessons to appease Muslims

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has banned people exposing their shoulders and thighs at an event at a public swimming pool in Dandenong, in Melbourne's south-east.

The Dandenong City Council and the YMCA applied for the ban to be implemented during swimming lessons for Muslim women scheduled for next August.

It will apply to both Muslims and non-Muslims attending the event.

The vice-president of the Victorian Islamic Council, Sherene Hassan, says she does not support the restrictions.

"I basically believe that individuals have the right to wear whatever they'd like to wear," she said.

"I understand the organisers of this event have good intentions. They want to bring Muslims and non-Muslims, but my preference would be no dress code stipulated for non-Muslims."

Victoria's Equal Opportunities Commissioner says the ban must be put into perspective.

Helen Szoke says the restrictions apply to a two-hour, after hours swimming session, targeted at multi-faith groups.

"People are not obliged to attend, minimum standards of dress are very common and where minimum standards of dress are identified on occasions it's often to allow people to participate," she said.

It's retarded and while I'm sickened this is happening in my country I feel a lot of relief that many people are not OK with it.

How they expect one to swim with covered shoulders, I don't know. >.<'

 

Who wants to bet that a group of students will run around butt naked whit security after them lol . This measure is an abuse and the council should be asked to resign , failing that just do what we do wherever someone puts security over liberty : shoot them .

 

I'm actually hoping their is a bit of nudity.

The area is about 30 minutes from where I used to live a few years back and I can imagine people from around there doing that sort of thing.

I can't understand pole that swim whit anything more then boxers/thong&bra . I mean where's the pleasure of feeling the water on your skin ? Swimming in a burqa/whatever they're using must feel like swimming in a condom .

Hell , even scuba diving is boring if you have to do it in cold water .

 

I don't know why they're doing this in August either - August here is Winter. Lol.

Indeed, I don't get the swimming in more than something light either; shorts look better on a guy than "budgie smugglers" as we call them in Australia, but I'd get a guy preferring the latter - shorts seem heavy when wet.

Personally I think a one piece on a really sunny day is the most anyone should wear - that's the whole Aussie summer mentality; little clothing on hot days, beers, pools, BBQs. ^-^;

this restriction only applies to a few hours, it's a kind of event which people needn't attend if they don't want to. I don't see a problem here.

 

may be that's the intent of this swimming lessons, they might be sick of teaching so they chose this sortta cloth material
they would not drown they might be having tubes around

 

At least change the colour of the buqrqa to white so there is some transparency

Along this line of thinking, perhaps it might be fair to say when I can swim naked in Saudi Arabia, they can swim in clothing that scares children and is a security hazard in my country ^-^;
