Hi there Its great to see some Aussie directories and Ive known about yours for a long time, however I think for your directory to be taken seriously you need to redesign the whole thing. Get a better design a new script and have direct links. Please dont get offended but once my Aussie directory is launched (very soon) I do have a directory section but wont be adding yours until it improves. Not saying you care but Im just trying to give you my thoughts honestly as I can. Your directory looks very "pre made". Good luck anyway!

I agree with ernster, perhaps you can attract more submissions with real link rather than redirection links..

    Thanks for the feedback.

Directory is just a hobby at the moment. My main focus is my forum which is about six months away from earning me a full time living. That design sucks as well - it's essentially an unmodified vbulletin install (well, barely modified) - but my users don't seem to mind. In fact, they often tell me how much they like it.

Funny, the directory script does use redirect links but Google seems to love it. The site gets tons of seach engine traffic.

A redesign and change of script might be on the cards when I have the time. In the meantime it makes more than the hosting costs so I'm happy with that.

You know this comment has been troubling me now for some time so I thought I would address it.

Is it because of the redirected links or the design that you wouldn't list my directory?

Of course you have the right to list whatever you want in your directory but I'm just wondering what the specific reason is. If it's because of the redirects that you wouldn't list it, will you only be listing directories that provide direct links?

And if it's because of the design, will you not be accepting websites in any category that don't meet with your personal 'design approval' irrespective of content? I ask because I have come across quite a few links that have been submitted to me that I have accepted in spite of design flaws because the content had merit.

Frankly, that remark comes off as very mean spirited and condescending. Just thought I'd let you know.

I think you'll find direct links will generate more interest. The design looks fine to me for a directory considering the majority of whats out there, and as for the way that comment was put, well I think it's a bit rich from someone who's not deployed yet.

Not too bad for a hobby - keep it up :)

    Cheers,

    JL

First of all I would like to say again that I hope I didnt offend you which I guess is a bit hard when I was posting a couple of major faults, however my intentions were good. My comment may of come off as mean but I promise you I was just trying to help and give you some tips which you can disregard or think about.

I have no problems adding a site into my directory if it has tons of useful content but the design isnt up to stratch, however IMHO, in the case if your directory, at this stage I dont think it has either. Of course that will change within time. Being a up coming web designer, I guess I take the design of a web site very seriuously as Ive changed the design of my directory atleast 5 times. Not to say your design sucks or anything but from the moment I saw your directory, it never made me go "wow, this could be something special". You may not have web design skills and that is no means your fault, but if you want this hobby to lead anywhere having a good first impression is really important. The main problem I have with your directory is that the design looks very pre-made.

As far a direct links go, I dont care too much about a direct link but many people do. I care more about seeing the link Im going to click in my browser status bar. Of course having direct links or not, doesnt influence my decision at all, that was just a suggestion.

That's a fair point and one I would like to address.

I felt I had a right to offer my thoughts as I have spend the last few months working on my directory getting it ready to launch. Iv'e basically slept, and breathed directories nearly every day for 4 months or so and spending hundreds of dollars on my directory. Basically I have been taking it really seriously and I have read a lot about directories and just felt I had some knowledge to share.

PS: Joe Blow please dont take the rejection too personally looking at the directories I see launched these days, ( I know yours has been around for a while) I would reject about 98% of them. Good luck with yours, I really mean it:)
