Auditors say billions of dollars wasted in Iraq

WASHINGTON - The U.S. government is at risk of squandering significantly more money in an Iraq war and reconstruction effort that has already wasted or otherwise overcharged taxpayers billions of dollars, federal investigators said Thursday.

The three top auditors overseeing contract work in Iraq told a House committee of $10 billion in spending that was wasteful or poorly tracked. They pointed to numerous instances in which Defense and State department officials condoned or otherwise allowed poor accounting, repeated work delays, bloated expenses and payments for work shoddily or never done by U.S. contractors.

    .........................
Found overpricing and waste in Iraq contracts amounting to $4.9 billion since the Defense Contract Audit Agency began its work in 2003, although some of that money has since been recovered. Another $5.1 billion in expenses were charged without proper documentation.

    ..........................

    Halliburton cited

Of the $10 billion in overpriced contracts or undocumented costs, more than $2.7 billion were charged by Halliburton Co., the oil-field services firm once headed by Vice President Dick Cheney.

No wonder Cheney loves this war so much.

    Indeed mate, it's a disgrace.

I did a similar thread on 10 November last year:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=175822

It's quite shocking the amount of money being banded about over there.

As if throwing money around out there will solve the problem.

AUDITORS? Great source. Of COURSE they're going to say that.

Now get some HONEST sources ;)

I'm quite shocked myself that you don't think our troops deserve that funding...

The problem with sheeple like yourself is that you just do not pay attention.
You really need to read the link I posted to the thread I posted, then read what I put and look at the 2 links I posted before quoting me and asking if I don't think the troops need funding.
The clue is in the 22 minute audio file, if you can't be arsed listening to it then don't misquote me mate as it makes you look stupid.

The troops deserve the funding but we are talking about $8 billion dollars gone missing, not accounted for and not even metered.

Nobody knows where the money has gone, and we all know that $8bn is a lot of money.

Why is this a surprise? History offers many lessons. Tons of $$$ were poured into Vietnam and much of it was filtered back out to foreign banks by corrupt officials.

I don't know about you guys, but I say "boo America!" We should be ashamed and deserve severe punishment and ridicule in the world public forum. Every American should have to pay double for a slurpee at 7/11 to make up the shortcoming and while there, the 7/11 store clerks can issue three swats to our behinds for being naughty. We should immediately surrender and apologize to the nice terrorists who are just misunderstood. After all, that's what gworld's intent always is, so I say we give him what he wants the world to know....

    BOO America!

It's the dangerous corrupt bastards in charge of the USA that are causing all the problems GTech, the American people are fine. Maybe a bit brainwashed and controlled but none more so than people in the UK and many other parts of the world.

For the real terrorists you only need to look as far as your own administration.

When Iran kicks off the shit really is going to hit the fan, there is nothing we can do about that because your C in C has got too much power and doesn't listen to any advice that he is given, yet you still staunchly support him.
    Unbelievable. :(

Yeah, really! Unbelievable, when the best option is to immediately surrender to Iran, willfully and with great enthusiasm for millions of people in Iraq, turn over Iraq to al qaida, pull down the American flag at the Whitehouse and raise an islamic flag in it's place. But, not before we unconditionally agree to Iran (and send them flowers, praises and cheers) wiping out Israel. Once we get rid of the Jews and all the white folks, the world will be a much better place! Surrender! Lay down and die like the dirty infidels we are! The best options for all the world! Praise Allah, death to Israel, death to America and all that shit

    /sarcasm off

I don't get these guys- of course there is some corruption, there are people involved. But again point at a few and say all America is bad again. Oh that's right our troops are murdering and raping everyone- all of our troops are.

Come on get your head out of your rear and think a little.

Hopefully they can pinpoint where the money is going, which I believe they can - follow the money until it has no trail and arrest the last person in the row.

Problem is someone will pay someone off and just like the Oregon governor who pretends to investigate Oregon's' gas prices. LOL Out Governor must have a huge stash in a Swiss account growing daily from the bribes he takes. He should run for the president of Mexico!

Back on subject - get real guys, find the crooks and hang them .... errrrr slap their little hands (sorry got to be PC.)

note to self, bust stocks in Haliburton before the investigations start.

What a waste, this money could have been used for much better. Everything from armor and protection for the troops to schools for the children in Iraq.

You have lots to learn about making accusations like this. You have no statement even to back this up.
