I have a client who wants to start a website to stream mp3 off the site. ( Now, just so that you know, these are tracks recorded by local bands and the client has full rights to stream them ) Now, I just want to know how much server resources would this consume ? Will I be needing a dedicated server or VPS for this ? Or a reseller account would do fine ? I'm sorry, but I'm totally new to streaming, so I do not know if it uses any resource at all or not ? Lastly, what script do you recommend for use ? Remember I do NOT need a mp3 player. I need to be streaming music which people can listen on their Winamps / WMPs / or other players. Thanks
Well, the most popular way to STREAM music seems to be through Shoutcast (for winamp). For that, you would at least need a VPS if not a dedicated box. You can find some good deals on here.
Thanks Evolv5, I was going through the documentation of shoutcast and as far as I've understood, it requires that I play the stream on my local PC. That is not what I am looking for. I ( or the client ) will be hosting the mp3 files on the server. Cna these be streamed ? Thanks
You can do it. It's called streaming on demand here you may see some offers http://www.egihosting.com/ondemand.aspx http://www.streamsolutions.co.uk/index.php?page=cdsinfo and also here you may find a complete list of providers and services offered http://www.radiotoolbox.com/hosts/
Thanks nikg for those links. I was in talks with ken from egihosting and as it turns out, on demand streaming is not going to help me he tells me that I will get individual links to all content that is hosted. I want a continuous playback of all the content that is hosted. Anything ?
Well, there is a way so that you could make an .xml playlist and a FLV player. But then, well, people could still change song. Maybe setup 1 server to broadcast to a shoutcast server. I'm not exactly sure how it's done, I've never done it myself, just some friends.
Yea, I think that is what I am coming to. Set up a server to stream to a shoutcast server. But then again, I still need the know-how to do this. Any shoutcast offers btw ?
