Auction function or a DP clock

My grandfather said, there's nothing like a good clock.. and i have to agree.

Please ignore me if it's been asked before, but i think it would be great if there was an auction function when creating a thread that worked like Ebay.

Just have a "check box" under the polls option, with a drop down where you can specify a duration. Then when a thread gets loaded, a static "17h 15min 32sec" would get displayed at the top of the thread.

The when the page is re-freshed it changes similar to Ebay.

I know it would add yet another query, but it would mainly be used on the domains and sites sections.

The reason is so many people post and say "Auction will end at 8pm"

8pm where? Antartica? Vladivostoc?

It gets confusing with time zones.

Or maybe a Digitalpoint Clock visible in these sections, so people can use DigiTime in all time based transactions.

Hows this idea on the retarded scale from 1-10 with 10 being mega-retarded.

Yeah it can get confusing, an auction i was watching the thread starter said "auction finished at 8pm EST" then went offline and didn't have a location in his profile.

I'm in Australia, we have an EST so does i think Malaysa, USA and who knows where else and they are all different obviously.

I realise an Auction function available on each post might be difficult and Shawn would have to mess with the database, but even a Javascript clock/date at the top of the child forums in BST would be great.

We could have a Digitalpoint "Dtime" and use it as a universal time piece for time related auctions and sales.

Would beat having to Google, 2PM Mountain time then calculating time difference working out daylight saving in both countries and coming up with a local time.

 

I agree fully. I just sold some sites (Sydney, AU time). It makes for confusion. I say yes to clock

 

This would be useful to have...since people here are from all corners of the world! We should atleast have a time zone convertor? (or.. we can't use a third party's )

Anyhow, not sure if this would be popular enough.....

 

Problem with a time converter is when people say 5pm EST

It could go here, on the BST threads (see pic)... I don't suppose it would be much different then inserting the adsense code for display in threads. Using a bit of Javascript it shouldn't add too much baggage to vBulletin.

I don't think any other webmaster board does this, so it would be kinda unique. Not to mention soo much easier when people say "Auction ends 6pm DPtime"

EST is Eastern Standard Time. It is only for the Eastern Seaboard of Australia.

It is pretty easy for auctioneers to just say.. Auction finishes 24 hours from start time stamp, or auction finishes at 8PM Salem Oregon time..

 

I like the idea too, but try to find an auction that actually has an end date/time. I think an ending date/time should be mandatory to post an auction in which case the clock thing could be a must not an option.

Yeah it's easy, but many don't. And saying "Auction ends 8PM at whatever location" means Googleing the time difference, making sure your reference is correct with daylight savings implemented which alot of list that state the time offset don't, then doing calculations to work out local time.

I believe if it was implemented and when people became aware of it's purpose, every time dependant thread, sale or transaction will be based on "DigiTime".

 

I like this idea. I think this will make it clear to the participants of an auction thread on how long it the auction still gonna be.

I'm sure it wouldn't "get in the road" of future vBulletin upgrades or add much baggage to page loads.

A universal "DigiTime" that the whole DigiPoint community bases time dependant threads off would be a valuable addition.

Brilliant idea! what about add a bid button with the limit of recorded start from, BIN and current bid + min increase
And the bid button should be disabled after the auction is expired.

P.S. I also think it can be integrated with major payment processor to automatize the entire process, have a look at the buy a drink system

 

Your idea is even better. But that button should be optional.
I've seen several auctions that says: "Auction ends 24 hours after last bid", so if clock is not linear and is changing with each bid, could be confusing

I like the idea. It would be easier a bit to quick look "when" we are now.

 

Why have there been no official post / reply to this thread? Usually shawn himself posts his views about suggestions made. Maybe he is taking a rest after all those database errors

I think this is a WONDERFUL suggestion...

 

Alot of people use the "Auction ends 24 hours after last bid" due to the timezone confusion and not having a universal clock to base transactions on.

I thought about the whole Auction style bid button, or a countdown timer but this would require some database tom-foolery, tables, storing yet more data and risk stability of the board, and possible complications when upgrading vBulletin.

However, a simple Javascript or Flash clock running on "DigiTime" would only need a simple line of code added to the template. It also wouldn't add much baggage to page loads or sql queries.
