Bossy boots! I can't help bitching about hypocrisy - it just winds me up tooooo much. And, I'll do it if I want to :D

Good point about the drug company scenario ... as a simile, I think it's a little over dramatic ;) It's not like lives are at risk is it?

Anyway, I'm happy to adapt. I feel kinda sorry for the good quality designers & people that are making what I see as a fair living, from selling good quality link placements. I simply don't think they should be lumped in amongst the big spammy players.

FYI, some of us don't have as huge of egos as you suggest. I just really don't like the Big Brother mentality of Matt Cutt's asking people to snitch.

I, for one, see the clear difference between paid advertising for traffic versus paid back links for SERP's. What bothers me is the duplicity of Google's own webmaster guidelines suggesting Yahoo! Directory, which is essentially just a $300 dollar paid back link.

Whether they like it or not, by placing such a high emphasis on back links, Google has created a commodity. Google will make algorithm changes to discount the value of detectable paid links. Then, the commodity market will get smarter and figure out new ways to be less detectable. And so the cycle continues...

Google's reign at the top won't last forever. The more they can persuade everyone to buy into their method of marketing the more you feed their profit machine. Who the H*** are they to tell me how I run my business and who I can sell links to?

They are doing exactly what is in ONLY their own interests, not those of the web community at large.

So no matter what the purpose, webmasters will get punished equally.

    Actually...

They are doing what is in their best interest. So they are doing nothing that we are not doing.

And they are not telling us what we can and can not do, they are telling us what they are going to do about what they include in their search engine.

Does it suck for us? Yes, but it's their internet, not ours. Seriously.

If we don't like it all we can do is SEO to other SE's, because they have the SE in our titles for a reason (so we can optimize to search engines).

We could all stand up (well, sit down at our computers) and drop Google by promoting and optimizing to other engines. diversify...

These changes are going to affect the rapidity with which G "discovers" new sites. Already we have sandboxing & now potentially paid links are to be de-valued. If G wants to enhance the quality of the web they should go to work on getting rid of MFA sites. The algorithms for this would be much simpler than trying to figure out what is a paid vs a non-paid link. I wonder, what is the reason they haven't gone after MFA sites more aggressively??

    ;)

In any case doesn't really matter. Some people will adapt to this, others will go out of business. Such is life on the web.

If google got their knickers in a twist over paid links they surely would have done something before it became a multi million dollar industry.
I know people on dp alone that regularly make over $1k a day through link sales on forums.

Google is interested in Paid clicks as well. Considering they just bought Double Click. But Microsoft and AT&T is going after Google for an anti trust lawsuit. I am no quite sure of all the details. But even major corporations are catching wind of Google's rampage of owning and dominating the industry.

With jokes aside, this does happen; GM went down big time, and Wal-Mart never quite made it.

If by no one you mean webmasters, you may be right ;)

The average user will continue to use them until they are slowly pushed away by the average webmaster (assuming we start pushing).

Maybe we should start reporting a ton of links that are obviously not paid. Then they'll think that people can't pick out paid links, and get rid of the 'report paid link' link in their webmaster center. :D

Google will do what's right for them, monetarily speaking. If, by going after webmasters and devaluing their links, their profit line starts to dwindle significantly then they will, no doubt, have a rethink on the whole situation.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, is launching a search engine. I have no prediction, but it will be interesting to watch.
