If google de-indexes every page, then it will just die. That should be easy to understand. I mean, there are other SEs. Google might be a big one right now, but if this continues, major advertisers will use it less and less. Their income will decrease, and everything will just fall. Or people will just start selling javascript links instead. Im sure that would be possible.

I have a suggestion to avoid G picking it up, describe the site and only pass on the URL in pvt messages I know it makes it more labour intensive but its better than losing the PR

If so, what about directories? Are they considered as paid links?

what's stopping someone from pming you, asking you what the site is, and then saying that you are selling links? Let's say a spy from google or something of that sort.

Sites like reviewme will be fine because they require the blogger to disclose the fact the post is paid. Google might devalue links in paid posts but if you're just using reviewme for links then you are wasting your money anyway.

Not at all. I'm a webmaster because I have a passion for photography, and the web is the best medium to convey that. I haven't sold (or bought) any links, so whatever Google is doing doesn't affect me. Or my site. I don't think most webmasters will be affected.

In all honesty, most sites that exist only for advertising and link sales aren't helping web users in general, or Google's index; just background noise. They aren't trying to shut the web down, they're trying to slow down practices that devalue merit.

I am a member of many forum's, not just web site related, one in particular is classed as an authority site in its niche and people from all over the world come to that site to interact with others to learn about its topic and help others benefit from their wisdom.

This one site in particular allows paid links on its site inorder to help pay for the hosting and bandwidth etc.

I would hazzard to guess that without its paid advertising and link sales, the forum would NOT EXIST and its members would not benefit from the font of knowledge it has become.

Whist I accept that advertisers on this site get benefit from its members coming (in visitor numbers - and in particular very relevant visitor numbers) they are possibly also looking for other benefits to their ads and if the site was to be penalised by a reduction in its serps (for in theory selling links) then that in turn would probaly have a negative impact on its 'new member' uptake, ultimately leading to an almost denial of service to many new members.

As this site is not only relevant and important to exisiting members but is a MASSIVE source of very relevant information particularly to 'newbies' then IMHO 'G' would actually be doing its surfers a disservice.

    Seriously guys

If all the sites buying links where banned, could you mention one nieche where you'd have trouble filling the first few pages of SERPs with quality sites? Didn't think so ;)

I've not read more than a few posts of this thread, but if the rantings goes anything like the comments to Matt's post I just have to say this; He talks about a way for G to ignore paid links when calculating SERPs, not about banning sites buying or selling links.

Does anyone here really think that the overall quality of G's SERPs would decrease if all (or most of) the paid links were ignored?

I don't think there is any need to panic -- G can't enforce this except where people are blatant in selling links.

We just need to act a bit more cleverly and that includes not posting URL's in link sales threads.

Anyone fancy reporting dmoz for selling links, particularly in the adult related categories?

Well, that's one good thing to look forward to, if they have indeed discovered some technique that can prove whether a link was paid for or not, hahaha:D

Certain editors at dmoz should be shaking in their boots :D :D

No more accusations, excuses etcetera - google will be able to prove it once and for all

    And pigs might fly.

Again, AdSense is javascript links purchased for traffic. What G is trying to do is to improve thier SERP quality by discounting as many paid links (purchased for ranking) as possible. Bribed dmoz editors is a problem, though not one related to this.

I can't see this (discounting paid links) as a problem as I've still never loaded up Google in an effort to find websites that purchased a lot of links.

I kinda think it is related :D

If google have some new algo thingymajig that can potentially discern whether a website editor, any website editor, is financially benefitting for placing links wherever - it is generally called link selling isn't it ?

Why don't they test the new thingymajig out in their own front yard, before rallying the general public to do their footwork for them?

And as far as the seriously spammy players out there - they're easy to find ! Why try and turn a bunch of people with nothin better to do, into sneaky little snitches?

I've reported spam gmails, which I find highly irritating on a personal level, to google hundreds of times - never changes a thing :( Whereas, if I unfortunately come across a spammy link infested website & it is of no use to me, I simply close the window. I don't sit there and feel obligated to actually click on all the links!!

Yeah, I'd love to see more quality websites out there, but as far as eradicating the spammy ones is concerned - the worst ones I come across are the ones I find jam packed with google ads and very little or no content. Over the past year or two I've noticed them springing up everywhere and it really does pee me off when I'm trying to find something specific! Yet these sites won't be penalised? Because of the type of link ....pfffft

It's either just too much hypocrisy for me to deal with - or just the biggest load of hot air I've had the displeasure to've been made aware of :(

    PS
What is the real difference? Why do people want to improve their PR ? ...for traffic! The spammiest websites out there are buying links specifically to manipulate serps so more people clickon their adsense ads. I and many other website owners out there, buy links because they have a quality website offering quality services - but would take years to ever get a decent serp on google without them (especially asmy website isn't as unique as a porn site and will therefore never get into dmoz) ... & by which time, my website will be forced out of business.

There's different reasons why people buy links - some good, some bad. I hope google take all factors into consideration as opposed to just sweeping the board.

It's the same difference as a drug company buying ads for their new painkiller or the same company buying a researcher to write a favorable research paper about their drug.

In the first instance they're advertising, in the second instance they're fooling me.

Why do you use google? Because they're best or because they rank pages with many purchased links high? If identifying paid links makes the SERPs better then by all means do exclude them. I'm not saying they will succeed, or that they wont have false positives, but I do say that if it makes the SERPs better noone should complain. I bet they're doing all kinds of crazy stuff to find the true value of links, and I have no objection to any such method that improves the SERPs.

Let me guess that all people here complaining about this has bought links in an effort to improver their rankings. To all of you this has to be said; This would be a fair improvement of G's ranking engine, if it is implemented you can either continue bitching about it or adapt.

Clint Eastwood said in (I think it was) Heartbreak Ridge, "improvise, adapt, overcome". Do it, stop bitching
