Attempting affiliate marketing and could use a boost of confidence

I have been trying my hand at affiliate marketing, and so far I have only lost money :( I have just a few quick questions and I would really appreciate any advice.

I have signed up with clickbank and CJ. I found a couple of products and purchased adwords ads that pointed directly to the marketer's page (haven't made any of my own landing pages yet)

The problem is: to rank in the top 3 ad places I need to spend about $1.00 each click. So far, clickbank shows i have sent a total of 100 'hops' and so far no sales....If the payout rate is $20.00/ sale, at $1.00 per click, I need to send less than 20 people for this to be profitable. Am i correct in this thinking?

I've heard people are promoting ring tones and making good money... well to rank high in the ads for that term it probably costs a good bit with so much competition, and sales for ringtones must be small... I wonder how these people can be making money.
I'm shooting for smaller markets, with higher payouts, and it sure isn't working, so maybe there's something i'm missing.

I'm just losing hope after spending this money and not seeing one sale, and you guys are the only ones i can ask... my friends sure know nothing about this....

anyway I've got my rep stick ready to give thanks

It all depends on the keywords that you are using. You should study the affiliate program the affiliate program that you will advertise first before paying.

so use keywords other than the obvious ones?
like promoting ringtones under 'phone audio sounds' or something?

if I've sent over 100 people to my clickbank advertisers, and haven't had a sale, does that mean its the advertisers not converting, and its the products fault, not mine?

Adwords can get very expensive in a very short time. I would suggest you stop with Adwords, and do some free marketing for a while. Free blogs, article writing, and blog comments are all free methods of getting your links out there without any money out of pocket.

While doing this, read up more Adwords and quality score to see what mistakes you might have made in the past.

Just make some money without any costs for a while, and that should help overall.

    Best of Luck!
