You've done it. You're able to target and rank for a number of long tail keywords such as "action video games for kids" or "video games for adults without sex". You know there's more traffic and potential conversions for the phrase "video games" but how do you go about getting it? Do you change your title, possibly dropping rankings for the long-tail phrases for a better chance of getting traffic for "video games"? Do you not change your title at all and instead build backlinks with the anchor text "video games"? What do you do to get to that next level?
Yea a good question. I was thinking about the same thing a few days back.. and what I came up is to start by building backlinks with the more competitive keywords as your anchor text... any other thoughts anyone?
Changing your title from 'video games for adults without sex' to 'video games' will not help you rank for 'video games'. If you build lots of quality backlinks your pages will start ranking for better keywords. Pretend the page's title is 'video games for adults without sex'. With 0 backlinks you can rank for 'video games for adults without sex'. With 100 backlinks you can rank for 'video games for adults'. With 1000 backlinks you can rank for 'adult video games'. With 100000 backlinks you can rank for 'video games'. With 10000000 backlinsk you can rank for 'games'. The on-page optimization won't take you far, the backlinks will.
If the original title already contains the keywords, i would focus towards building thematic backlinks. I would also look at the on page content, H1 Tag usage and placement and make sure the keyword density was correct.
as every SEO has their own target keywords whether longtail keywords or not,. If you are after for a quick rank then go for a longtail with a lesser traffic,. But for me, I still work for a relevant keyword which can boost my organic traffic once it place on the top searches
I think its better doing it from very beginning. Longtail keywords better targeted from content. I think that works better. As you start ranking for longtail kw your competitive keywords will follow slowly.
Not always, to one of my sites I get 10,000 uniques per day from broad terms and 2,000 from long tail.
