Depends on who you ask. AT&T asserts the merger will help them build a glorious nation wide LTE network, bringing mobile broadband to more rural areas. The Telco Unions who help make AT&T the horrible company it is claim the merger will bring DTE telco jobs to America. AT&T has also promised to repatriate 5000 call center jobs they sent overseas years ago, if the merger goes through.

On the other side of the coin, consumer advocates point out that once the merger goes through, 90% of the mobile service sold in America will be sold by two companies, AT&T and Verizon. 100% of GSM mobile service plans will be sold by one company, AT&T.

So, if you think having two choices instead of four for mobile service is a good for America, then you are for the merger. If you think a company that has been banking it's cash rather than hiring people and building its infrastructure should be allowed to acquire a company that has lower prices and good customer service, making it too big to fail by having fully 45% of America's mobile service, you are probably in favor of the merger. Otherwise, you might find yourself against it.

Why the Obama DOJ is running against the will of Union solidarity is baffling.
