Asterisk is an open-source communications platform. It does not a such allow you to make free calls, however, if one of you got an asterisk system and each of connected to it, then yes you could talk for free, just like Skype.

You cant make free calls to landline and mobile if thats what your referring to. But you can make free VoIP calls "User to User" both connected to the system.

To be honest its exactly like skype, you can call other users for free but you have to pay for landline and mobile calls.

    Hope that helps.

Only program that allowed unlimited landline calls in the US was Oovoo during the beta period, as for the rest I'm sure that there are programs that allow you to perform landline calls, with certain limitations, for example 3 minute call limit.

Nowadays most IM provides voice calls too..... like GTALK... So asterisk also comes under this list.. But it would be better if it is possible to make free calls to mobiles and landlines free..

Asterisk is just a software where you can set up your VoIP accounts and configure it which one to use everytime you make calls. For example, you have 3 VoIP accounts. For international calls, you want to use VoIP 1 because its the cheapest, so you set up your phone that when you dial *01 then it will goes to VoIP 1 and you will use VoIP 1 for calling out. For local long distance, you want to use VoIP 2 and you do the same thing and so on.

Now you may also use it for PC to PC calls like Skype or YM or MSN, etc but the software itself can not be use to call landlines or mobile phones. You still need a VoIP provider like Onesuite and more and set it up and you phone system in your house can be configure accordingly.
