Associate O matic store and duplicate content problem

Discussion in 'Amazon' started by Dave Hybrid, Dec 6, 2006.

    Hey all,

I have an Amozon Associate O matic store and am having problems with duplicate content.

As all content is pulled from amazons site I dont see what I can do to combat it.

Would MOD rewrite make any difference?

Has anyone else got any tips?

    Thanks,

    Dave.

I don't think mod_rewrite would help because your page content wouldn't change. Only the URLs would. I'm not sure how the whole Amazon thing works so I'm sorry for not having any suggestions.

Yeah... thought as much... the way it works is all the products are pulled from amzon and displayed exacly the same as 100's of other affiliate stores.

Annoying thing is before my site went supplemental I was getting a lot of tail end search traffic.

    Thanks.

Sorry, I cannot resist saying that I have never heard of AMOZON SHOPS before :D

Jokes aside, the only solution I can see so far is creating unique content with an iframed version of the store inserted there.

If you can put the shop in as a file include or something, you are probably free to add as much unique content to the pages as you like. If your products aren't the main content on the page, you shouldn't suffer from the duplicate content.

I think the only thing you can do with Associate o Matic is to carefully drill down with your products for inclusion so that as little duplication as possible occurs within each category.

There are two solutions to the problem:

    1. Get LOTS of backlinks get your home page to have a PR7
    2. Write your own reviews for each product. Duplicate content filter has been drastically increased over the last few months.

Thanks for your reply, can you explain how a PR7 will help?

Does having a PR7 site turn of the filter?

Also does Yahoo! and MSN have such filters and are they as vigilant as Google?

    Many thanks.

    Dave.

For number two, do you mean write reviews for some specific products in your AOM store and then link to the product pages within your store?

I have watched quite a few AWS stores some mine some other peoples. Most seem to end up in the supplemental result! Generally the Google love affair ends in 4 to 6 weeks if you happen to be even that lucky.

PR does seem to help quite a bit as does having a website with original relevant content. Limiting the number of AWS pages indexed may also delay going supplemental. A major mistake most people make is to build a AWS niche store. Then allow Google to follow similar product links. Pretty soon you end up with thousands of non related product pages being indexed.

Biggest mistake I made was thinking more pages indexed was better. WRONG!!! Find a topic that you know about or are interested in and then build a website based on that. Then add a "limited" number of Amazon products that complement your website. No you probably won't get rich but you should generate sales on a regular basis! Plus hopefully stay out of the supplemental results.

For my antique furniture website I don't plan to allow Google to index any of my AWS pages in the future. From personal experience I believe too many AWS pages may even hurt a websites ranking? My goal is to use iframes and AWS with aStore funtioning as the shopping cart. Plus I have disallowed all search engines with the robots.txt file.

Haven't had much time to work on the script lately. Though it should convey the concept. Once you get a handle on working with AWS it is pretty simple and lots of fun! Plus a great way to learn the basics of PHP!

For #2 I'm suggesting drop AOM entirely. AOM stores work if you can convince Google that indeed your site is an authority on X.

Does using amazon text links, recommended product links etc. on each page went the website into supplemental?

Wow. That's pretty cool. I wonder how they did that.. From what I have seen with the AOM engine there isn't really any customization possiblities. Am I wrong?

How they did what?! AOM lets you do all that. You can completely customize it.

How they've made the site look more like a blog than a store.

I guess I've missed that part in the setup.

That site has some 96,000 indexed pages and from what I can tell none are supps.

Is this due to their customised template or their PR6?

If its the PR6 then that shouldn't be too hard to fix, am already a PR5.

    Cheers guys,

    Dave.

    P.s.

Was also looking at the www.game.co.uk affiliate, anyone used this?
