I had a question about how I can Assign a domain name to a server. Like you can access a website based by putting http://IPADDRESSHERE in your browser or MYSITE.COM. I want to assign the domain there instead I have never done this - I run game servers from home and people have always used IP addresses to connect and I wanted to assign my server its own IP so people just has to know the domain which is much easier to memorize than an IP. Help and direction is appreciated. thanks!
do you recommend any? i am currently using Fedora 8 Linux i found dyndns.com so i will see that but if there are better, I'll be happy if you can let me in on it thanks!
Well, what you need to do first off is call your ISP can get a static ip address. That is your first step. after you get that, you should already have bind running on FC8. I willl not get into the whole thing now because you need your static ip first. You could do it with a dynamic ip but it is simply a pain in the butt and it is not worth it.
well there are softwares that help with the dynamic ip and my ip only changes if the modem is disconnected for some reason and it was d/c the other day by accident - and it was the first IP change in over 6 months so other than that, I don't generally unplug my modem - i've only had 2 different IPs the past year and about the bind running - i am not a huge fedora expert but I will look it up - and a response would still be appreciated thank you!
yea i can actually set that up with my own domains with the a-name records - i've been testing with that now what i wanted to do was make it so people see the domain name instead of the ip address when they connect to my server i own mostly steam games, they can add the server with cs.domain.com but if you look at forum information again, you get the IP like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx etc..
