Hi, I’m very new to the world of ‘Adsense’ and still learning about the simple ins and outs, so please forgive my ignorance. My question is as follows.. What are your methods for assessing the relative profitability for specific material? That is to say, how does one establish what content (and thus keywords) will provide best profitability?

You can use the Adsense Keyword tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Or DigitalPoint's. There are a lot of sites that tell you which keywords are the most profitable, but most of the time they're wrong, because the rates are constantly changing.

A lot of people here will advise you to create a site on a topic(s) that you are interested and have a lot of knowledge in i.e. do not chase the big paying keywords.

Yes that does make a lot of sense.. Infact you could say the same about business in general.
