Ok I've noticed lots of blogs related to mine have a bunch of links on the right side of their page. I figure there is a good chance they would add mine if I asked by email. I was curious, have you guys done this and how do most websites react to this request?

Yeah, just ask...the worst that can happen is they don't answer you.
I do blog link exchanges constantly...do not care right now if the blog I link with is related to mine or not.
I just ask for home page to home page links.

Go to the link exchange forum for good ideas, to get links, swap links, etc.
    Wealth of information there.

How about make intelligent comments on their posts. I generally check out the person's blog before I review their comment. If the blog looks cool, I link to it. I figure - they took the time to comment on my blog, I should return the favor.

Link swap requests via email - I hit "delete".

See - this makes no sense to me. I am always interested in getting comments to my posts - why not spend the time commenting on peoples posts on their blog rather than SPAMMING them? If you write an intelligence comment on their blog - they will appreciate it. I certainly do!

But google doesnt give links in "comments" area much weight, you are much better off having a link on their homepage, rather than a guestbook or comment areas.

if links are easy to get, they are probably not worth a great deal.

This is not a reciprocal link-exchanging program. I do not ask anything
