Why don't you use forum scripts like phpbb?

You don't need to install it on wordpress. Just install it in the subfolder of your site (yourblog.com/forum) and link to it from your wordpress blog. You can get the installation help from PHPBB website.

one problem about that (unless there is a bridge?) is that user will register for you blog, then have to re-register for the forum.

one other forum plugin for wp is rs-discuss :)

i dont have one for rs-discuss but this uses wp-forum
    http://www.ladysovereignweb.com/forum/

judging by the error with phpbb also, i would say that there is a problem with mysql or the database?

no probs, its easy just create a template for the forum page and have it set to whatever width you like > http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Creating_your_own_Page_Templates

well im guessing that you know how to setup a database etc, and the error phpbb is giving is that phpbb cannot connect to the database which means one of 2 things 1) you entered the wrong details for mysal database, database user, hostname etc or 2) mysql is not running or being blocked (contact your host).
