I've been watching TV lately and seeing these Ask.com advertisements. Usually I just ignored them but today I decided to actually watch one, and hear about the "new" Ask.com - the evolution from Ask Jeeves. A few years back, I tried Ask Jeeves. Honestly, I think I can honestly say that I was traumatized from such bad search results that I experienced with Ask Jeeves that I used nothing BUT Google. After seeing this commercial, I was interested in using Ask.com's new service. I thought it was the least I could do since the commericals cost the company a fortune, I bet. So I tried using Ask.com using a question as my search term: What is CSS? I was amazed! The search results given to me are a LOT better than Google's for both the search terms CSS and What is CSS?. I think I am going to be using ask.com a lot more frequently than I am using Google, even with schoolwork. Seems like Ask.com finally got their act together and can really be a top competitor to Google. Well, that's just my valueable opinion, perhaps.
whether the search engine's results are good or not, NOT depends on whatever 'you' think. What you think better may not be 'better' to others. It is depended on what 'users' think. That's a statistics concerpt. The problem for other SE to be better than google is: google had already got the users relevance feedback information, which is the most valuable information to a SE. Unless another SE can get enough relevance feedback information, which costs $$$$ and time, google will still be the best available SE.
Try getting millions of other to switch and see what happens... nothing, lol. Still looks dumb to me, nothing compares to Google... NOTHING!
depends on term/keyword, etc. They have good results, but I wouldn't say they are "WAY BETTER" than Google.
Not everyone want to type "waht's CSS". They would simply type "CSS". ask.com will remain as a nice niche site.
I Agree Ask.com Is Better Than Google At Least For The Search Terms I Use I Am Amazed At The Difference I Will Also Be Switching To Ask.com
I think honestly you use what SE is relavent. 99% for me it's Google. However, MSN is usually more up to date with current info and others use that if its what they are looking for. But as a webmaster, if you are looking at how your site ranks (which you didn't state) then you really need to be targeting an SE that has the most people. Skinny
Meta-Search Engines are probably the best Bang for your Time. They take the best results from the search engines and discards the spammy un-relevent results. Because each Search Engine has their Speciality.
Interesting. I've favored Google for years...never really did use Yahoo! or MSN search for the past 10 years; just always been promoted the idea to use Google, which I have been doing. But the TV commercials I think got me into Ask.com recently and I just wanted to say how impressed I am with their search results on all the terms I've searched for with them. Sometimes I think that Google favors all the higher PageRank websites and thus they're always being whored into search results more frequently than less higher PageRank websites, even though the websites might have equal quality. I've used MSN as an alternative and thought it was great also, just because of my above belief. But my results for searching the internet as a webmaster and everyday user with Ask.com have so far been great. I don't think I am wanting to go back to Google, unless of course I have to. I have no problem with them, and I haven't turned into an Ask.com fanboy. I just find Google perhaps "too overated" in my own opinion. Though, admittingly, Google is the dominant search engine and most used website (I believe...that is between Google, MySpace, and Yahoo!) at this time. I'm not bashing Google at all, just simply stating how good I think Ask.com has evolved into with its search engine.
I had never used it... just always used Google.... Well, I just gave Ask.com a run... not impressed... I typed in "civil war" under the "News" function and my returns were relevant, but not current. One article said it was found 34 minutes ago... the article was written almost a month ago.... With Google I get a relevant article, and if it says it was found 34 minutes ago it will at least have been written on the same day I was searching.
Well...I don't have a clue of why that is. But perhaps maybe it was spidered and indexed 34 minutes ago and maybe the Ask.com bot just recognized it as being posted 34 minutes ago too, if it didn't find it before.
Alexa says: 1. www.yahoo.com 2 www.google.com 3. www.msn.com 4. www.yahoo.co.jp 5. www.baidu.com 6. www.sina.com.cn 7. www.ebay.com 8. www.myspace.com 9. www.qq.com 10. www.passport.net
Alexa is often wrong in the ranges above 100,000. Alexa is frequently wrong in the ranges above 30,000. It is difficult for Alexa to be wrong in the ranges below 100. MSN is there because of all of the copies of Microsoft Windows that ship with MSN as the default home page.
OK, I've just done a search for 'dog' The first real result is just above the fold. and 8 of the results are sponsored. This is a search engine that you need to buy yourself into! Furthermore, If I wanted information from Wikipedia, then I'd go there.
The most recent run of my scientific search engine testing shows all of the competitors to be very close in terms of search relevance. Google: 9 Yahoo: 9.17 MSN: 9.11 AltaVista: 9.17 AllTheWeb: 9 Ask.com was never popular enough to be included in the testing.
I personally think that google will always be better than any other search engines! It's like the best one. I used AJ a couple of times and it never gave me the results i needed. Just my opinion.
The old one had about 12 sponsors per page. The new improved has 8. The results seem more relevant than before at least in my niche. Still majory spammy. The beauty of Google is it's distrust of the web, and sandboxing everyone for a period. They take time to put sites in their SERPS. I'd say it all comes down to relevance, but ASK has proven me wrong with all the sponsors time and time again. All of the search engine trying to get rid of spammy sites and yet ASK just throws spammy ads into their results pages! Amazing.
