problem you have with blasting your article to hundreds of article directories is the duplicate content issue, you are actually wasting your time AND effort.
If you spin articles than content will be more or less unique. Secondly, duplicate content is not an issue as if you write something amazing and becomes all over the internet Google will not penalise you but move considerably higher for this work. There's not point of writing 100 articles and submitting them to 500 directories each as this is just a waste of time.
Duplicate content is not an issue if the reason for article submission is backlinks, and not traffic. Where traffic is concerned, Ezinearticles is still the best.
If you want YOUR webstie to stand out, you have to use unique content, if you are using your site for adsense, quality is not needed.

I don't understand ezinearticles. The site is unattractive, uninteresting, and mostly just spammy copy - yet Google loves it. Either way, I still use it for traffic & backlinks - it works great.
