Articles and Duplicate Content

I wrote some articles for one of my sites and submitted them to the article directories. Unfortunately being a newbie, I submitted the articles from my site without any modifications, so now I think I am being penalized for duplicate content. :(

Would it help me if I were to rewrite the articles on my site so that they are not exact duplicated of the articles I submitted?

You should be OK, what makes you think there is a penalty?

If you are worried simply make the articles on your site better than the others.:)

God. It seems so much easier to offer an article that you have researched and worked hard on for your site to the article directories doesn't it? It feels like having to do the job twice to start from scratch and completely rewrite an article so it is complimentary but differenet to the one you will use on your site.

But think of it this way --- supposing your site was about goldfish and you have prepared an excellent article about the mating cycles, gestation and care of pregnant goldfish, you've already done all your homework. Most sites probably don't want or need that much detail unless they are specifically for fish-fanciers so by including all of that detail on your article directory site - you may well be cutting out some potential users.

Instead summarise and bulletpoint. Keep the article useful and by all means clearly state that more details on the topic are available on your site. Instead of only fish-fanciers now you have the potential of being on educational sites, general pets sites, kids sites, lifestyle sites etc.

You have also skipped the possibility of a dupe penalty.

I would say EXPAND on the article you have submitted. Be sure that if people click through from it to your site they find more and better info than in the site which published the article.

    Thanks for the replies.

I am no longer submitting my original content to the article directories because of this problem.

How much would I have to modify an article that I submit so that it is not a duplicate of the one on my site?

No search engine will penalize any site for duplicate content just because the article is submitted to xxx of article submission sites.
No any penalty for that article to be picked up from those sites and used by other webmasters on their sites, blogs and newsletters.

Really, in this case, there is much ado about nothing.

Duplicate content is when there is more than one site with the same material on it.
Example, all those horrid MFA sites.

In situations like these people generally hire content writers to rewrite articles. Rewriting is fairly cheap as it is a much easier job than writing an article from scratch. If you need such a writer I cna help you out there. PM me if interested.
