Twisted Image -- Media to blame?

Everyday in todayâ€™s society, we see more and more models that are thin beyond belief. Are eating disorders, depression, low self-esteem all the causes of the media and how itâ€™s portraying beauty? Well, my opinion says the media is in fact affecting our outlooks on how to look and what to eat and how to diet.

The main media sources including television and magazines and fashion shows that portray women being slender, we have taken this image and incorporated it into our lives. Thinking that this is how you need to look to become accepted in society. Itâ€™s this sort of thinking that has led thousands let alone millions of women into eating disorders and serious depressions.

Although our society (Americans), itâ€™s known that we are slowly increasing in our obesity rates, but when these rates of obesity are rising, the average weight of a model is slowly declining. Engaging more pressure upon everyone else to match the average appearance of a model. According to Raderprograms.com, the data listed shows that studies that have been preformed on women says that 79% of teenage girls who vomit and 73% of teenage girls who take diet pills often read health magazines or fitness magazines. What does this all mean? It says that more and more youths are trying to achieve the certain â€˜lookâ€™ that models have.

Magazines have an enormous effect on someoneâ€™s perception on their appearance. When these perceptions become extremely negative, it can lead to :

* bulimia
* anorexia nervosa
* low self-esteem
* desolation
* depression

In reality, the media or how we perceive the image of one will not change anytime soon. It has already put a grasp on actors, actresses, models, singers, dancers and other media personalities to follow itâ€™s strict ordinance. The only thing that we can change is how we ourselves view ourselves. Once the need of perfection subsides, then can the media become a positive and beneficial entity where people can learn to be happy with the way they look and truly achieve their self perfection.
